Historical Review

The University of Pamplona was founded in 1960 as a private institution under the leadership of Father José Rafael Faría Bermúdez and converted into a Public University through a Departmental order by means of Decree N° 0553 – August 1970.  On August 13th, 1971 the National Ministry of Education gave the institution the authorization to graduate students with diplomas as any University might, according to Decree N° 1550.

During the decades of the 60’s and 70’s the University grew under the eminent pedagogical profile forming graduates in the majority of the areas within the educative system: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Social Sciences, Pedagogy, Educative Administration, Foreign Languages, Spanish and Literature and Physical Education.

In the decade of the 80’s the University of Pamplona assumed the responsibility of professional formation in other fields of knowledge; this step was begun at the end of that decade and offered the program – Food Technology.

Today, the University has been amplified significantly with its educative offer achieving the attention to more demands in the formation of professionals generating this is the region or in the same scientific, artistic, technical and Liberal Arts Evolution

Later on, in the decade of the 90’s the fields of Natural Sciences and Technology were created, the Microbiology program with emphasis on Food, Food Engineering and Electronics and Technology in Environmental Health.  In the field of Socio-economic sciences, the professional programs of Systems’ Administration were also created.

Today, the University is preparing itself institutionally to attend to new projected educative demands stemming from the region and from the scientific, artistic, technical and humanities’ development. The University within this time has offered programs at all scholastic levels: undergraduate, post-graduate and continued education in all the educative modalities, such as: day-time classes, semi-day classes with distances modality, and totally distance modality which has permitted this University to offer its services in many places in Colombia.  This labor has been backed by a group of prepared professionals at the best universities in this country and abroad.

This labor is developed thanks to a team of professional highly formed in the best universities of the country and abroad on a level of specializations, masters’ degrees and doctorates and an efficient administrative management.  At the same time the process of growth and qualification of the University has been accompanied by the construction of a modern physical plant with wide and comfortable spaces for academic labor organized in the ambience of living together as a family with just nature; the same has been given to laboratories and modern systems of communication and the information given that today, has comparative advantages in the fulfillment of its Mission.

The Institutional Educative Project is understood as a navegational map for our University to be able to express itself in its strategies and constitute a generative bridge of prospective action for the different academic units within this institution.

According to Law #30, 1992, the University of Pamplona is an autonomous entity with its special regimen, jurisprudence, autonomous administration, academic areas, financial aspects, independent patrimony and belonging to the National Ministry of Education.
