In this work, the measurement of the diffusion length, the Debye screening length and the quantum efficiency of a strongly absorbent photorefractive crystal Bi
12TiO
20 is reported. The experimental technique of fringe-locked running holograms and energy exchange considerations are used to determine the four parameters simultaneously. In the fringe-locked running holograms technique, a feedback mechanism imposes a specific value for the difference of phase between the transmitted and diffracted beams at the output of the crystal, which is different from the value that would be obtained without the feedback system. This constrained difference of phase forces the hologram to move with a certain speed. The measurement of the intensity throughout one of the directions of the beams when coming out of the crystal, allows calculating the experimental diffraction efficiency as a function of the electric field applied to the sample and the speed of the interference fringes. The fitting of the theoretical and experimental curves makes possible the estimation of the physical parameters of the crystal. The model considers self-diffraction effects and bulk absorption. Additionally, the effective field coefficient for the electric field applied to the sample is estimated.
