Abstract
Characterization of wetlands by laser-induced fluorescence
An optical method was developed to study the hydrodynamic flow by dispersion in a subsurface flow constructed wetland, build in the Ginebra research area (Valle del Cauca, Colombia). The method utilizes laser induced fluorescence (LIF), and Rhodamine WT as fluorescent tracer. Water collected samples were excited using a 35 mW, DPSS Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. Fluorescence spectra were measured and elaborated to obtain the tracer concentration and the residence time of the fluid elements. Typical distribution functions are presented and the observed time evolution was studied for three different wetland systems. The results allow the determination of the wetland’s hydrodynamic parameters.
Keywords: Laser Induced Fluorescence, Rhodamine WT, Constructed Wetland, and Fluorescence Tracer.
